Nantucket hydrangeas

Introduction to the Book

Just thirty miles off the coast of New England's Cape Cod lies the extraordinary beauty of Nantucket Island with its clear blue skies and familiar breezes.  Every summer, from late June - August Nantucket's beauty is enhanced by the islands quintessential flowering shrub, the hydrangea, which greets residence and visitors along the island shores and streets and shines throughout its gardens.

A Nantucket garden framed with hydrangeas becomes a quiet retreat when stories and share with friends over a cup of tea or a glass of wine.  The garden and its hydrangeas offer solitude for reading, writing, or simple reflection.  In the evening, charm and intimacy fill the air as the fog rolls in creating a solemn calm in the garden.  I hope the reader will find as much pleasure and joy as I have during my years on Nantucket.

About the Book

This is a gorgeous book with a linen cover and full color photos throughout.  It's a perfect gift and a must for every coffee table on or off Nantucket.  Hydrangeas are identified in a thorough index as well as on a full spread grid.

Nantucket window boxes

Introduction to the Book

There are more than 800 antebellum homes in the historic district, most built during Nantucket's reign as the whaling capital from 1750 to 1850.  The overall simplicity of the structures makes the perfect back drop for window boxes, which range from formal to cottage style and everything in between.

The different styles weave together to connect with the landscape and produce a splendid show of colors and textures that work all over the island.  The well-placed flowers bring pleasure with continuous ribbons of color.  Window boxes are simply beautiful gardens in miniature while the flowers in them are like dear old friends.

Whether wandering up the cobble stones streets and winding paths or sitting on a bench overlooking the harbor, window boxes are a strong presence, creating a sense of place and charm for residence and visitors alike on Nantucket Island.

NANTUCKET CHRISTMAS

Introduction to the Book

A Christmas season visit to Nantucket is particularly captivating.  Beautiful wreaths adorn the traditional Nantucket doors and evergreen bows and garlands flank the entrance to homes and businesses.  Window boxes spill over with an abundance of greenery, ribbon, and other adornments.

Whether you are on island to attend the classic Christmas Stroll or to wander cobble stones streets and lanes taking in the charm of homes decorated for the season, you will be filled with the Christmas spirit on Nantucket.  The often present mist, evening fog, or snow this time of year, only enhance the beauty of the island, which rest in a winter calm as the season comes to a close.
